How to play Octordle

Type a five-letter word and press Enter: it lands on all eight boards at once. On each board, green is the right letter in the right place, yellow is in that word but elsewhere, and grey isn't in that word. Each key on the keyboard is split in eight, one cell per board. Find all eight words in thirteen guesses. Full rules, a worked example and a practice board on the how to play page.

Stuck? Every board shows how many answers still fit, and a hint reveals one letter where it narrows things most. Done? The review grades each guess so you can see which ones pulled their weight. Want more? Unlimited Octordle has endless boards with 16, 13 or 12 guesses. Missed a day? Every past puzzle is in the archive, answers included. Prefer four boards? Try Quordle.

Frequently asked questions

What is Octordle?

Octordle is Wordle times eight: you guess one five-letter word at a time, and that guess is scored on eight hidden words at once. Green means right letter, right place; yellow means the letter is in that word but elsewhere; grey means it isn't in that word. You have thirteen guesses to find all eight, so there's room for five probing words and no more.

Is this the original Octordle?

No. Octordle was created by Kenneth Crawford in 2022 and is now published by Merriam-Webster. Puzzlune's Octordle follows the same rules with our own word lists and daily picks: a free daily, unlimited mode in three sizes (16, 13 or 12 guesses), an archive of every past day with the answers, a words-left counter per board, a hint that reveals one letter and explains why, and a guess-by-guess review after you finish. We're not affiliated with Merriam-Webster.

How does the keyboard work?

Every key is split into eight cells, two columns by four rows, in the same order as the boards: the left column is boards 1, 3, 5 and 7, the right column 2, 4, 6 and 8. A cell turns green or yellow as you learn about that letter on that board. A letter that's grey on every open board goes dark: it's dead. When a board is solved, its cells clear so you only see the boards that are still open.

How do eight boards fit on a phone?

Only the row you're typing is full height; guessed rows shrink to thin strips and unused rows to a hairline, and a solved board folds into its title line. A strip of eight chips at the top shows every board's number and how many words still fit it; tap a chip to jump to that board. The keyboard sticks to the bottom while you scroll.

What does 'words left' mean?

After each guess, every open board (and its chip in the strip) shows how many words from the answer list still fit all the clues you have for it. It's a number, never the words, and you can switch it off in the settings. Use it to decide which board to attack: a board with 2 left is one guess from done; a board with 60 left needs a probing word.

How do hints work?

A hint picks the board that's furthest from solved and reveals one letter of its answer in its place, choosing the letter that narrows that board the most. The revealed letter appears above the board and on the keyboard. The daily allows three hints; unlimited mode has no limit.

What is the review?

After the game, every guess is graded in hindsight: ✓ if it cut the field of possible answers across the open boards by more than half (or solved a board), – if it made progress, ✗ if it ruled out less than a third. Tap a ✗ to see the word that would have narrowed things most. It's how you get from thirteen guesses to ten.

Do I need an account?

No. Progress, streak and stats stay in your browser. A day counts for your streak once all eight words are found.
