How to play Star Battle

Tap a cell once to mark it with ✕, twice to place a star. Drag across cells to mark several ✕ at once. Every row, every column and every colour region needs exactly two stars, and stars can't touch, not even at the corners. With auto-place on, a new star crosses out its neighbours, and the moment a row, column or region has both its stars the rest of it is crossed out for you. Full rules, an example and the deductions on the how to play page.

Want another one? Unlimited Star Battle has 2,046 boards from 8×8 to 10×10. Missed a day? Every past day is in the archive. Prefer one star? Play Queens.

Frequently asked questions

What is the Star Battle puzzle?

Star Battle is a logic puzzle on a square grid divided into coloured regions. Place exactly two stars in every row, every column and every region so that no two stars touch, not even diagonally. Every puzzle has one solution and can be solved by reasoning alone, no guessing.

Is this the same as Two Not Touch?

Yes. Two Not Touch is the New York Times' name for the 10×10 two-star Star Battle, and German magazines print it as Doppelstern. The rules are identical. Puzzlune generates its own boards from 8×8 to 10×10, with a daily puzzle, unlimited mode, teaching hints and a free archive. We are not affiliated with the New York Times.

How is Star Battle different from Queens?

Queens is Star Battle with one star per row, column and region. Two stars add a second kind of reasoning: counting. You often know a row needs two more stars and only a few cells could hold them without touching, which rules out their neighbours. Everything you learned in Queens still works here.

How big is the daily puzzle?

It follows the week: Monday is an easy 8×8, the board grows and gets harder through the week, and the weekend is a hard 10×10. Unlimited mode has 8×8, 9×9 and 10×10 boards in four difficulties.

How do hints work?

A hint never guesses. It shows the next deduction a person could make, for example "the mint region still needs two stars and only one placement keeps them apart", highlights the cells involved and marks them for you. The daily puzzle gives three hints; unlimited mode has no limit.
